Suet-sin’s Sisters
Yau Ching / 1999 / 8min / Cantonese / English and Chinese Subtitles
Lesbians from two different generations talk about desire, growing up and family issues in this short documentary, one of the most open, direct and perhaps the first self-representations of lesbians currently living in Hong Kong. It focuses on interviews with two lesbians from two different generations. Both discuss in front of the camera issues of sex, coming out, their relations with the family, sexual identification, etc. Through borrowing examples from lesbian icons from pop culture, including film excerpts of the famous female Cantonese opera star, Pak Suet-sin –– who was widely known to share a life-long partnership with another female Opera star, and music appropriated from female singer Teresa Teng, the tape seeks to point to a long and repressed tradition of lesbian culture in this Chinese society.
